Seasonal Field Technicians Needed

Looking for a summer job? Want to work outside? A 4-day work week? How about a favorable schedule with nights, weekends and holidays off?

The Macon Mosquito Abatement District is hiring seasonal field technicians for the 2022 season. Field techs work outdoors to locate, sample, and treat mosquito breeding sites. Sites include wetlands, man-made containers, and catch basins- basically anything that holds stagnant water.

Occasionally control adult mosquitoes by collecting adult samples and treating with adulticide via truck fogger. Interact with the public by answering questions in the field, responding to customer calls, or informing people of standing water on their property.

Job Description: This position is seasonal where an employee is hired for a limited period during the summer months (May-August)

Starting Pay: $14.00/ Hour

General Purpose: To carry out routine assignments and related operations in mosquito vector control and as required under supervision.

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and make appropriate treatments of designated mosquito breeding locations as directed
  • Maintain an awareness of irrigation patterns and practices in assigned area
  • Dig and clean drainage channels, cut vegetation and perform other labor in source reduction
  • Keep accurate inspection and treatment records of work performed
  • Maintain assigned equipment and vehicle in a clean and professional appearance, report deficiencies in equipment or vehicle to Supervisors
  • Keep District buildings and grounds in a clean and orderly condition
  • Assist in receiving and maintaining stock inventories

Education and Experience:

  • Education equivalent to high school diploma
    • Should have or be trained to have a working knowledge and understanding of:
    • Proper safety precautions and use of insecticides being used by the District
    • Mosquito developmental time under prevailing temperatures
    • Mosquito larval habitats
    • Proper application techniques of mosquito larval surveillance and treatments

  • Exercise independent judgment
  • Work outdoors in difficult terrain and weather conditions
  • Must be physically able and willing to do heavy physical labor
  • A valid Illinois Driver’s License with an excellent driving record
  • A Pesticide Applicators License from the Illinois Department of Agriculture
    (*If not in possession, you must pass exam upon hire)

Seasonal Receptionist

The Macon Mosquito Abatement District is accepting applications to fill our seasonal receptionist position for the 2022 season. The receptionist will perform all daily clerical functions including answering telephones and engaging with the public. Flexible start and end dates.

Starting Pay: $14.00/ Hour – 38 hours/week

Other duties include:

  • Responsible for resolving problems with customers while providing outstanding customer service.
  • Schedule meetings, including contacting meeting participants to insure attendance.
  • Participate in tracking and entering sick/vacation time and handling time sheets.
  • May handle incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Responsible for data entry
  • This position requires regular and reliable attendance
  • Enter resident service requests
  • Record treatment information
  • Some general cleaning tasks
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.
  • Ability to operate necessary equipment, including computer, printer, copier, and calculator.
