Vector Biologist

Full-Time/Salary commensurate with experience/education

The Macon Mosquito Abatement District (MMAD) is a local government entity serving the citizens of Decatur and several other adjoining townships. Our mission is the enhancement of health and quality of life through the suppression of mosquito transmitted diseases and the reduction of annoyance levels caused by mosquitoes. Surveillance of mosquitoes and vector-borne diseases plays an integral role in fulfilling this mission. We are seeking a highly motivated, qualified individual to join our team as a Vector Biologist.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Entomology, Environmental Health or other public health related field; experience in vector biology preferred. Demonstrated ability to supervise the work of others and capability to effectively and cooperatively work with superiors, colleagues and the general public. Possess good oral and written communication skills. Must have the ability to work flexible hours as needed including evenings. Teamwork and professionalism a must. General computer skills and understanding of databases; must have a valid driver’s license and meet all aspects of the district’s job description for this position.

Summary of Job Duties: The Vector Biologist will plan, organize and direct one of more aspects of the district’s surveillance and control program. Conducts surveillance and control of vectors. Performs laboratory work related to the surveillance and control of vectors. Monitors trends in vector population fluctuations across the district. Assists in implementing procedures to survey for and prevent vector borne diseases and abate major sources of vectors. Assists in preparing public information and making education presentations to the general public. Report issues related to vector surveillance and control. Apply scientific principles to practical situations.
